Chris Osburn, Ph.D.

Director of Blue Economy Innovation Program, NCSU

Christopher Osburn is Professor of Marine Biogeochemistry in the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences and Director of the Blue Economy Innovation Program (BEIP) at North Carolina State University. His research interests span carbon and nitrogen cycling across the aquatic continuum, using optical and chemical properties of organic matter to assess effects of human activity and climate change – especially extreme weather events – on water quality and sustainability of rivers, estuaries, and the coastal ocean. Osburn has published over 100 peer reviewed articles and book chapters and is an associate editor for both Marine Chemistry and Estuarine, Coastal, and Shelf Science. As Director of the BEIP, Osburn works with students, staff, faculty, and external partners to promote interdisciplinary solutions for problems relating to the sustainable use of ocean resources, recognizing the ocean’s connection to coastal watersheds. He has perfected brewing two types of kombucha and has worked through over half of the “Blue Zones Kitchen” cookbook.
